About the International Coastal Cleanup

The International Coastal Cleanup is a popular, fun and highly visible event in Martin County.  Last year, more than 1,800 volunteers in partnership with dozens of sponsors and other supporters, made our local cleanup a success.  Families, businesses, civic and school groups dedicated over 2,600 hours collecting more than 17,000 cigarette butts, over 4,500 beverage containers and thousands of other pieces of litter.  Our most unusual items last year were a parachute and a wooden shoe.

The purpose of the cleanup is to engage people around the world to remove trash and debris from beaches and waterways, to identify the sources of the litter, and to change the behaviors that cause pollution.
 
 
 
 


Tens of thousands of individuals across the globe come together each year to participate. Through its international visibility, the ICC has raised public awareness about inappropriate waste management practices and convinced many organizations and communities to become better stewards of our environment. Now in its 24th year, the International Coastal Cleanup is the most recognized cleanup event in the world, spearheaded by the Ocean Conservancy.  This year, the ICC will take place on Saturday, September 19, 2009.
 
Our theme is Make a Splash-Remove Trash. Through Keep Martin Beautiful's local coordination, volunteers in our area are able to beautify our beaches and coastlines by removing unsightly debris.  We are also able to help protect birds and marine life by reducing the likelihood that these innocent creatures will become injured or entangled in plastics or ingest deadly debris.  

Immediately after the cleanup, we will be holding a celebration event at Flagler Park to thank our many volunteers and sponsors.
