The International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) is a popular, fun and highly visible event in Martin County. In 2010, nearly 2,100 volunteers in partnership with dozens of sponsors and other supporters made our local cleanup a success. Families, businesses, civic and school groups dedicated more than 4,000 hours collecting more than 29,000 pounds of litter and marine debris.

Spearheaded by the Ocean Conservancy, the ICC is the most recognized cleanup event in the world and will take place on Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Immediately after the cleanup each year, we invite all of our volunteers, sponsors and community supporters to Flagler Park in Downtown Stuart for a celebration event.

In 2010, volunteers collected 19,003 cigarettes from Martin County waterways, which is the equivalent of more than 950 packs of cigarettes. Among the most unusual items found included the front half of a bike, three 55-gallon drums, a king-sized comforter, plastic lawn furniture, car tires, aluminum roofing, a wooden bookshelf, and a rake.

The purpose of the cleanup is to engage people around the world to remove trash and debris from beaches and waterways, to identify the sources of the litter, and to change the behaviors that cause pollution.

Tens of thousands of individuals across the globe come together each September to participate and through its international visibility, the ICC has raised public awareness about inappropriate waste management practices and convinced many organizations and communities to become better stewards of our environment.

Through Keep Martin Beautiful's local coordination, volunteers in our area are able to beautify our beaches and coastlines by removing unsightly debris.  We are also able to help protect birds and marine life by reducing the likelihood that these innocent creatures will become injured or entangled in plastics or ingest deadly debris.

In order to ensure that we target all the rivers, beaches and other waterways in Martin County, please contact us to register you, your family, business, organization or school.
